Printing and Scanning #

Note: For undergratuate and postgraduate-taught student printing in CIS computing labs, please see the labs documentation.

There are five Ricoh MFD (multi-function device) printers available to staff in the department. These are located in:

Printing #

To print to these printers from departmental machines, please choose the SCI-CIS print queue (sometimes referred to as the Follow Me queue). You'll then be able to collect your print jobs from any of the Ricoh printers by tapping your staff card or entering your DS login credentials (e.g. aab12345) at the printer touchscreen and choosing to release your print.

If your staff card does not have contactless functionality (as it was issued some time ago), you should contact HR at humanresources@strath.ac.uk and they will be able to direct you to one of the regular staff card pick-up sessions held on campus.

Printing from departmental Windows or Linux computers #

Your domain-joined departmental laptop or desktop will automatically be configured with the SCI-CIS print queue. You do not need to follow the setup steps below.

Configuring printing on a non-departmental Windows computer #

Note: This step is not required for departmentally-issued Windows computers

To print from your own Windows computer, make sure you're on either Eduroam or the wired guest (open) network, open Windows Explorer (e.g. by double clicking on This PC) then navigate to \\sci-papercut.science.strath.ac.uk\SCI-CIS. This should start the driver installation process and add the SCI-CIS queue to your computer.

Configuring printing on a non-departmental Linux computer #

Note: This step is not required for departmental, puppet-managed Linux computers

  1. Open a terminal
  2. Download the printer install script: wget https://personal.cis.strath.ac.uk/cis-support/linux_printing/sci-cis.sh
  3. Run sh sci-cis.sh to install the printer
  4. Enter your admin (sudo) credentials when prompted

The script will do the following:

The script requires admin privileges to enable the print queue.

When you first try to print, you will need to authenticate to the print server - please enter your DS username with a leading DS\, e.g. DS\aab12345.

Configuring printing on a non-departmental Mac computer #

Note: This step is not required for departmentally-issued Mac computers

  1. Open a Terminal (press ⌘+Space, type Terminal and select the Terminal application)
  2. Download the printer install script: curl https://personal.cis.strath.ac.uk/cis-support/macosx-printing/macos-sci-cis.sh --output ~/Downloads/macos-sci-cis.sh
  3. Run the script: sudo sh ~/Downloads/macos-sci-cis.sh
  4. Enter your admin (sudo) credentials when prompted

The script will do the following:

The script requires admin privileges to install the driver package and enable the print queue.

Scanning #

To scan, first tap your staff card or enter your credentials at the touchscreen, then choose the scan option. Scanned documents will be emailed to your @strath.ac.uk email address.

If your document fails to scan or you receive an error email, you may be scanning a document which is too large to scan in one run. Consider splitting your scan job into multiple smaller jobs, or lower the DPI via the printer control panel when scanning.

Large format, non-standard and high volume printing #

For large format (posters up to A0), high volume, stationery (letterhead, business cards) and non-standard printing, please see the university Print Services team.
